NMN raises NAD+ in human blood. That part is settled. Whether raising NAD+ changes anything you can feel is a separate question, and the honest answer as of 2026 is that the evidence splits depending on which outcome you measure.
There is a second thing an Indian reader needs to know before anything else. On 24 July 2026, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India issued a notice calling NMN an unapproved ingredient for use in food supplements, and asked e-commerce platforms to de-list a product containing it. [8]

What Is NMN and How Does It Relate to NAD+?
NMN is short for nicotinamide mononucleotide. It is a molecule your body already makes, built from vitamin B3.
Its job is to be a precursor. Your cells convert NMN into NAD+, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, a coenzyme involved in energy metabolism, DNA repair, and immune function. [7]
NAD+ levels fall as people age. That decline is linked to reduced DNA repair and cellular senescence, which is the state where cells stop dividing but do not die. [7]
So the logic behind NMN supplements is a chain with three links. NAD+ falls with age. NMN raises NAD+. Therefore NMN should undo some effects of ageing.
The first two links hold up. The third is where the argument gets thin.
Does NMN Actually Raise NAD+ in Humans?
Yes, and this is no longer seriously disputed.
A systematic review of randomised controlled trials covering 437 participants, mean age 58, found that blood NAD+ concentration rose with NMN supplementation. [2] The reviewers reported that the effect on blood NAD+ and physical performance measures peaked around 600 mg daily among the doses studied. [2]
A separate trial found NMN raised blood NAD+ levels without damaging blood cells, and also lowered blood triglyceride levels. [4]
Raising a biomarker is a real finding. It is also the easiest thing to prove, and it is the finding supplement marketing leans on hardest.
The harder question is what happens downstream.
What the NMN Human Trials Actually Found
Here is where two research teams looked at overlapping evidence and reached opposite conclusions. Understanding why is more useful than picking a side.
The positive read. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis pooled nine randomised controlled trials with 412 participants, all middle-aged or elderly. It reported a significant effect on gait speed, a standardised mean difference of 0.34 with a confidence interval of 0.03 to 0.66. [1] It also found a reduction in ALT, a liver enzyme, and reported that a smaller NMN dose had the most noticeable effect on insulin resistance as measured by HOMA-IR. [1]
The negative read. A separate systematic review and meta-analysis, registered with PROSPERO and covering adults with a mean age between 60.9 and 83, found no significant effect on any of its main outcomes. Skeletal muscle index showed a mean difference of minus 0.42, not significant. Handgrip strength showed no significant effect on either hand. Gait speed showed a mean difference of minus 0.01, with a p value of 0.79, which is about as close to zero effect as a result gets. [3]
Its stated conclusion was that current evidence does not support NMN and NR supplementation for preserving muscle mass and function in adults with a mean age over 60. [3]
Both papers examined gait speed. One found an effect. One found none.
Why Two Meta-Analyses Disagree About the Same Molecule
The disagreement is not a scandal. It is what early-stage evidence looks like.
Three things explain most of the gap.
Different participants. The positive review included middle-aged people. The negative one focused on adults averaging 60 to 83 years, and specifically examined sarcopenia, the progressive loss of muscle mass and function. [3] A supplement can plausibly do something in a 55-year-old and nothing in an 80-year-old.
Different outcome measures. Gait speed measured across a handful of small trials is a noisy signal. Small changes in which trials get pooled can flip the result.
Small trials, short durations. The systematic review of physical performance had a mean follow-up of 9.6 weeks. [2] Ageing does not happen in nine weeks.
There is a fourth factor the researchers themselves raised. Individual variability in lifestyle, health conditions, genetics, and gut microbiome composition likely contributes to the inconsistent results across trials. [6] Baseline NAD+ status may matter too. Someone already deficient has more room to gain than someone who is not.
What the NMN Evidence Supports Versus What Marketing Claims
Sorting claims by evidence strength is more useful than a verdict.
Reasonably well supported. NMN raises blood NAD+ in humans. [2][4] It appears safe at the doses and durations studied so far. [5]
Mixed or contested. Effects on muscle function and gait speed, where two meta-analyses disagree. [1][3] Effects on insulin sensitivity, where a Science trial found NMN increased muscle insulin sensitivity in postmenopausal women with prediabetes who were overweight or obese, over 10 weeks. [9] Those researchers noted more studies are needed to determine whether NMN has beneficial effects in preventing or managing prediabetes. [9]
Not established in humans. Reversing ageing. Extending lifespan. Anything resembling the transformations implied by aggressive marketing.
The gap matters because animal results travel badly. In mice, NMN has been reported to suppress age-associated weight gain, improve insulin sensitivity, and slow cognitive decline in an Alzheimer's model. [7] Mice are not small people, and mouse longevity findings have a long history of not carrying over.
Is NMN Safe? What the Safety Trials Show
Safety data is the more settled part of the picture, within limits.
A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study gave 1250 mg of β-NMN orally once daily for up to four weeks to 31 healthy adults aged 20 to 65. The researchers reported no severe adverse events and no changes beyond normal physiological variation. [5]
An eight-week study at 250 mg daily in healthy middle-aged Japanese men also reported it was safe and tolerable. [10]
Two limits are worth stating plainly. Most published NMN trials run around 12 weeks or less. There is no published five-year or ten-year human safety data. And a supplement people intend to take for decades has only been formally studied for months.
None of this is a reason for alarm. It is a reason not to treat short-term safety as proof of long-term safety.
NMN Regulatory Status in India: What FSSAI Has Said
This is the part most articles written for a global audience skip, and it is the part that most directly affects an Indian reader.
NMN is not listed as a permitted ingredient for supplements under India's Food Safety and Standards regulations covering health supplements and nutraceuticals. [8]
To sell it legally, a company must obtain approval through the non-specified food and food ingredients route. [8]
As of the approvals list published on the FSSAI website in June, no NMN ingredient or product had been approved. Two applications were under process and six had been rejected. [8]
In a notice dated 24 July 2026, FSSAI told two Gujarat-based companies that a product contained the unapproved ingredient NMN. The notice was copied to e-commerce platforms, which were asked to de-list the product. [8]
Meanwhile NMN supplements remain easy to find. A search on Amazon India returned nearly 120 results for "NMN supplement", and Flipkart returned 55 for "NMN". [8]
The situation differs by country. In the United States, the FDA confirmed in 2025 that β-NMN is lawful for use in dietary supplements, reversing an earlier position that had excluded it. [11] American regulatory approval does not carry over to India.
For a reader in India, the practical takeaway is not that NMN is dangerous. It is that the ingredient sitting in an Indian shopping cart today has not cleared the Indian approval process, and that is a fact worth knowing before spending money on it. Anyone considering it should raise it with their doctor, and be aware the regulatory position may change as pending applications are decided.
How to Read Any Longevity Supplement Claim
The NMN story is a useful template, because the same pattern repeats across the longevity category.
Three questions separate a supported claim from a stretched one.
Is the outcome a biomarker or something you would notice? Raising blood NAD+ is a biomarker. Walking faster is something you notice. A study proving the first does not prove the second.
Was it measured in humans or animals? Mouse studies generate the boldest headlines and the least reliable predictions.
How long did the study run? A 12-week trial cannot answer a question about decades.
Applied to NMN, the answers are: mostly biomarkers, increasingly humans, and not very long. That places it as promising and unproven rather than established or debunked.
